I'm gonna be down the Keys next week.... I'm packing my stuff, and I'm wondering what should be on the carry-on? My computer (suunto, air-integ)?

Your computer, regs, and any photo equipment you may have. Not only are you protecting it from possible damage due to the often abusive handling by baggage personnel, you're eliminating the possibility of your most expensive gear being lost by your friendly airline. Even if it's insured, the hassle of submitting a claim, etc. just isn't worth it, not to mention putting a damper on your diving vacation. You may get hassled a bit more by the security personnel and asked to remove the regs, etc., but as long as you're ready for it and cooperative, you shouldn't have many problems.

I flew to mexico a couple of months ago and carried on my reg bag. It contained the reg, my computer, and various save dive bits and pieces that happened to be in there.

I was stopped by security, not because of the reg, they said they see lots of those and it's not an issue, but because I had a wrench in the bag. They said I had to either check the bag or they would confiscate the wrench. I took the later option, having to replace a $5 wrench seemed like the lesser of two evils.

So be warned the current security regulations stipulate no tools in your carry-ons.

I always make sure I have my logbook and c-cards in the carry-on to make sure I can still dive if my luggage is delayed or worse lost.

Bringing C-cards is a very good idea. I've heard a lot of advice on what to bring on carry-on, but this is the first I've heard of making sure that particular piece of gear is packed onboard. Good advice.

.. in your carry on (regs, computer, camera). Make sure you pack your knife in your baggage though :bonk:

I use a small backpack. In it I put some magazines, paperback books, gum, checkbook, passport, sunglasses, a topside camera and whatever lens I have along, my keys, etc. My C card is always in my wallet.

I put the Camera Pelican case inside a regular suitcase. My dive gear and logbook go into my gear bag and all zippers are zip tied.

I try not to check my gear into the airlines until just before I leave. That way there is less time for someone to rifle my bags.

I traveled for years this way and have not had any trouble.:boom:

Yea, I do almost excatly as luvdiving... plus I try to wear cargo pants and stuff things in the pockets like film and small gear. And wait until the last minute to check bags is key if you are in a suspect area or country.

I once stuffed a wrench and some underwear into a small rucksack and sent it through as checked baggae for just that reason. I forgot and packed the wrench in the wrong bag. Security stopped me and wanted to confiscate it, so I headed back to the ticket counter and checked what must have been the smallest bag in the history of air travel.
