What kind lead shot for weights?

What's the best kind of lead shot for sausage or v-weight pockets and DIY soft weights? What kind of stores sell it?

On ebay someone is selling a 25# bag of #8.5 magnum lead shot for reloading and scuba diving. Starting bid was $30 and shipping is $9. Is that about the right price?

I've used both #6 and #8 in soft weight pouches. You might want to check your local sporting goods store first. I bought a 25# bag for around $35.

You might want to look into pouches that you can fill yourself. I don't know if that will work for what you want to do but I doubt you could make them yourself any cheaper.

I generally fill these pouches 1/2 to 1 pound lighter which makes them a bit more flexible.

Where do you buy this stuff? Would it be cheaper to order (any good sites)?

I called a few gun shops in my area but they didn't sell lead shot.

#8 shot is small and can slip through nylon mesh. I suggest #6 to maybe #71/2 shot. you can order it new through places such as MidwayUSA - Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gun Parts, Ammunition, Rifle Scopes & Airguns, but it is expensive. I found a box of mixed lead shot, which is not suitable for reloading, on ebay for $25 and it was 65 pounds. UPS ground flat rate is about $10 actual shipping, more if handling is added. I also found nylon pouches on ebay also; I saved a lot of money compared to buying in shops.

You got a good deal. There's someone on ebay selling 62.5# bags of reclaimed mixed shot for about $72 shipped, but it's a mix of sizes 7 ½, 8 and 9. I guess that wouldn't work?

It's too much anyway but I'm thinking I could buy it in bulk and then sell the excess here at roughly a break-even (non-profit) price...

I don,t know what you're using for pockets or what kind you need, but I used nylon stockings bought at a dollar store (got the idea from a dude here!). Ya put the shot in a stocking, tie a knot. Then fold the stocking back over the shot; tie another knot. I do this 3 times and it makes for a pretty solid weight pouch! And cheap...

#8 is too small, 6 would be the least size I would use. Larger sizes up to BB are fine. Look in the phone book for reloading supplies. They are likely to have shot. A reloading supplier may give you a deal on some larger sizes that they are having a hard time selling. Also, watch for a local gun show, there are always reloading dealers there.

Use the largest size that is comfortable. Lead oxide, which is toxic, forms on the surface, Thearger the shot, the less surface area per pound to oxidize. ALWAYS rinse with fresh water after salt water or pool use and air dry to reduce oxidation,

I ended up buying a 4# soft weight for $10 from the LDS which I cut open and poured into my sausage weight. I decided to forgo making any other soft weights because of the alleged environmental issues.
