Hello , I`ve been lucky enough to experience some wonderful diving in SE Asia. I am wondering whats your top destination, that easy and cheap to get to... and once your there...diving and accomodations are cheap too. I am alos looking for stellar dive conditions. Happy holidays and kind regards:14: Kevin:

For novice divers I'd say 'the Gili Islands' in Indonesia. Close encounters with turtles & sharks almost guaranteed, cheap accommodation and meals, nice beach life.

Not sure about 'cheap to get to' though. This surely begs the question, 'cheap to get to from where?'

Indeed! And also the time of year you are thinking of diving.

So, where are you coming from?

And how cheap is cheap? I can recommend some inexpensive liveaboards to the Similan islands, and Phuket is "cheap" to get to, and you can stay in cheap places.

Yeah, define cheap?

Anyway, just to share, my upcoming trip to Sipadan in March. My 2 night hotel in Semporna would be about RM100. Food 3d/2n about RM50 in Semporna. 2 day-trip dives to Sipadan is about RM400 (boat + all equipment).

For more expensive experience, one could stay on Mabul or Kapalai, but these resorts are way out of my range for the time being.

i think the Philippines has great infrastructure in place and most value for money.

Manado area, North Sulawesi (once you get there, it is pretty remote) is the best value I have seen. Lots of stuff to see. You see something new on every dive. Superb diving good guides. On Bunaken Island you can get a budget room for USD $15 with food and two dives a day for about USD$55 for two dives with excellent guides. No time limit on the dives. Dive gear rental available at very reasonable prices. They also have a small operation at Lembeh Island. You can split your time between the two locations. Small discounts for multiple days of diving in the form of free dives after a certain number of paid dives.

Still working on my trip report but will post it soon. Saw dolphins while doing scuba, pygmy seahorses, lots of friendly cuttlefish, the poisonous blue ringed octopus. Great dive spot. Nice people and out of the cyclone/hurricane/typhoon zone, May-October is the dry season, very calm, warm clear water
