What does STA stand for? Is it something to do with BP/W set ups?? What's the purpose of having an STA is having one a good or bad thing. Sorry for the newbie question.

STA = Single tank adapter. It's just a rail that you can use to attach a single tank, which is attached with a cam-band, to a backplate, which uses bolts.

Single Tank Adapter

It allows a conventional BP/wing to be used with a single cylinder.

Most BP/wings these days are designed so that a STA is not required but many of us use one anyways. It can provide extra stabilty and added weight and it can make switching tanks a bit easier.

It does add to the set back... it sets the cylinder back a little... but this is really pretty small... about a half inch or less. Some guys don't like that because it adds to the profile and might make reaching the valve a little more difficult. For me, the extra half inch is worth the benefits mentioned above and I can still reach my valve.

you use one if the bolt heads stick up on the particular plate you have. if the bolt heads stick up, then of course your tank wants to get off them, so it goes a bit to one side. the sta covers the bolt heads so the tank cradles on your plate better. some plates don't need them because of the particular bends the manufacturer put in them, and for doubles you don't need one because the bands holding the doubles together are what gets bolted to the plate - nothing is trying to balance in the middle. can you mentally picture this? it's so tough trying to write in pictures.

BTW, do you like your Halcyon rig? I'm thinking about getting the eclipse or pioneer for my upcoming trip. PS: Where did you purchase yours at?? TIA

Ya... my Halcyon stuff is great. I usually deal with Extreme Exposure.

There are several other brands available that are kick***, BTW.
