Hey guys, so I just barely passed my PADI open water written test and I'm fully certified now. I was wondering if you guys had any tips for someone at this stage in scuba diving.

PS, I can't go diving anywhere but a pool right now because there is either ice or the water is about 34 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yep, go diving! What else is there?

Why did you just barely pass? Did you do OW dives a while ago and have to redo the exam?

Pool time with a DM/instructor might not be a bad idea. It will keep your skills from totally rusting over the winter.

By "just barely" I meant within the last four days or so, not the margin by which I passed.

Thanks.

"Just passed" sounds a lot better than "just barely passed." lol

I would recommend joining or forming a small group of diving friends so you have buddies to dive with and go on trips with. This may take some work.

I also suggest doing the Advanced class, which is normally more of a sampler experience on the types of diving you can do in your region. It helps get your diving going.

You can also start buying your kit, but your preferences on gear will be informed by your continued diving experiences so no need to rush.

Good luck.

Get in the pool and hover. Do nothing else but hover. Maybe turn a few times, then hover some more. Raise and lower yourself in the water column only with your breath. Don't touch the bottom. Do some more hovering. You'll appreciate the skill later.

yeah, I probably could have worded that more clearly. Getting a group of dive buddies won't be an issue, my brother is a certified diver and my father and brother in law were certified in the same class as I was. I already own some parts of the kit like mask, fins, and bcd. as well as a wetsuit. I'm working on a reg set at the moment.

At some point if you can,
rent different types of gear, before you buy some brand new gear.

(Although to many changes as a new diver, can screw up your practice..)

I highly recommend backplate and wing over a bcd,
(especially if you are in the dive shop and see double tanks and you think, I would like to dive that..)

but dont be afraid to buy a used BCD cheap and dive it like crazy...

That said, it more important to get as much diving done ASAP,
You will become more confident and it becomes a bit like riding a bike,

Don't get gear buying fever, take it slow,
There are a lot of good used, almost new, deals out there if you look.
