For more info on the interminable 'which CF card is best', I'd recommend a look at:
www.rgalbraith.com - has a review of 'real world' camera and card tests (all CF)
www.dpreview.com (Storage Media forum) - LOTS of discussions.

FWIW, my 2c would be that there is not a LOT (but there is _some_ ) measurable difference between CF cards... and technology changing as fast as usual, last years info does not apply now. The dpreview site forums show the Ridata 52x card as being one of the faster 1Gb cards (it was also quite cheap when I bought mine). Frankly, I can't tell any difference in use between that one, and the Kingston 1G I bought with my S1... BUT the Kingston 1G cards were faulty (could not always retrieve the images once saved - back to shop, tried 3 cards in camera, all showed same problem, got money back, bought Ridata, now happy).
caveat emptor.

As an aside, my friends 300D (digital rebel) is MUCH slower at reading and writing images than my 10D... even if I put my 'fast' card in her camera, it is slower to read and load images. so, camera's differ too.

enjoy!

Woops,
should be: http://www.robgalbraith.com/ look for CF Cards database

Definitely a great link - probably should be in one of the stickies.

Problem is that it doesn't list a lot of "consumer" models like the Canon A & S series, the Oly 5050/60 or the Nikons...

TJ - if your goingto be shoting raw or high level Jpegs in a 10D your gonna want a 512 mb card or bigger because the 10D throws 2-8 mb files per image depending size and type of file . the only reason i have cards in my bag smaller then that is that i have some older cameras that only store .8-1.2 mb files and a 256 is more then enough and i have other cards in my bag.

When i get my 10D this fall or what ever replaces it i will be getting a couple more cards for my bag (probably 1 1GB and 2-3 512mb cards and most likely ridata as i have a lexar 40x card that is messed up (it will recognize every other camera in the world other then my c5050) but currently for my c5050 im getting a 1 GB card so i wont have to take the card out all day or while diving.

current card stash

Compact Flash
1 128 MB Lexar 12x
2 256 mb Ridata
1 512 MB Lexar 40x (The Dead one) going back to Lexar
1 512 mb Ridata older one with the white label

I dont know why i even have these but over time i have collected these

Smart media
1 32 MB fuji card
1 128mb Lexar
Memory Stick
32 mb sony came with a clie i used to own
XD
32 mb oly came with my 5050

on order
1 512 MB Ridata Card

and in the future will pick up at least one more 512 and two more 1gb cards so i have atleast 3-4 gb worth of cards so i will have more then enough room to shoot all day log and not run out of storage.

FWIW

I've been shooting max jpgs with the 10D, I seem to get 101 shots on a 256 card. My plan is to get a total of 4 256, and 4 512, if I'm on a trip that works out to 1212 shots. That works out to 33 2/3 rolls of film, with (ideally), all keepers.

The cards I'm using are Dane-elec, and Lexar.

Why don't I shoot in RAW? Everyone is buying into the myth that you need to; it's a nice feature, but I've found the extra adjustment work too time consuming. If I set up a shot right, I shouldn't need to 'fix it in post'.

There is a good artical in Outdoor Photography magazine this month, RAW vs. JPG. Check it out.

I've got a 3.2mb S230 and I use 5 128MB cards, Kingston and SanDisk. I get 70 to 80 pics per card which is enough for a dive. And if, god forbid, I flood I won't lose all my vacations pics. Besides with the rebates offered you can get them as low as $20...

I'm presently using 2 256mb cards as my mains and I have two 32mb that came with the camera.. I keep these in the case because, you never know I guess. Also, the Canon G5 has a movie mode.. I can take a 2 1/2 minute movie with a 32mb so kinda keeps it separate from the shots.
