Hi,
I am traveling to Aruba the first week of October for a poker tournament and want to get some diving in. Does anyone know the best operators and what the diving is like there? Also, where are the good places to stay there?

Thanks all
Julie

I was there last September. The diving won't be as good as Bonair or Curaco, but there are some good wrecks to dive. One of the wrecks is an old German WWII 400ft ship in only 70 feet of water.

We dove with Pelican Adventure Sports while in Aruba this past May. I was pleased with this operation's services but have heard other operations are good also.

A quick forum search will provide you with several dive operations to choose from. Also note which operations people say to avoid. I had to go with my second choice operator since my first choice had to post-pone diving for a few weeks.

I have dove in Aruba 3 times, the first with Red Sail and the last 2 with Pelican and I preferred Pelican. Not that Red Sail was not a great outfit but Pelican was closer to my hotel and they stowed my gear for me. I dove the unlimited package on all 3 trips and ended one of the weeks with 20 dives for $300! :11:

The major shops (Pelican, Mermaid, and Red Sail) will all do the same sites. The Antilla is a fantastic day and night dive. It's 400' long and takes many dives to truely do it justice. It's very easy to penatrate as well. Ashari reef, Pedernalis, and Sonesta Planes. The Sonesta dive is really nice, there are now 2 planes there; one is quite old, the other was sunk last October and I had the chance to dive it 3 days after it was sunk. You can actually sit in the cockpit if you are up for it. I recommend a night dive there if you get the chance, last time I dove there at night we saw a shark (I think it was a tiger but not 100% sure) and several turtles. Check out my pictures for some of the sights.

Have fun!

thanks for the thoughts. I know the diving won't be as good as elsewhere, since I just got back from Costa Rica a month or so ago and saw humpback whales (lol. hard to beat that) I noticed that most of the hotels are in Palm Beach. Anyone have any ideas on where to stay?

Anyone have any ideas on where to stay?

Wife and I have been traveling to Aruba during fall for the past few years...The Radisson is very, very nice...tropical-themed landscape on Palm Beach and Unique Sports of Aruba dive shop is right next door...haven't used 'em...or any dive op in Aruba for that matter...I'm new to diving but Unique has a good repuation...enjoy!

The Radison is "very nice". So is the Hyatt. One the "lower end" is the Holiday Inn, which isn't that bad, but we were able to stay 7 nights at the Wyndham for only $90 more (total per person, not per night). The Wyndham is very nice and we really liked it. The only thing negative I can say about it is that the bar "sucked" and the drinks were overpriced for poor quality drinks and service.

There are some "independents" and several "time shares" places you can rent also. Most places are either on Palm Beach or Eagle Beach or downtown there is the Renassaince, which has varied accomadations that are either "inland" a block or two or on the water. They do have an island beach that they offer a shuttle boat too.

I wouldn't go "all inclusive" unless you don't plan on leaving your resort. Aruba has some of the best restaurants of most of the Caribbean island. Some are very expensive though, so beware.

As for dive op's. Most have very good reccomendations except Red Sail or Mermaids. Red Sail is constantly bashed for poor service or cattle boats.
Mermaid has all kinds of other problems as people filing criminal charges against
the owner for sexual touching underwater. You can find more negative comments
on Mermain on the http://aruba.com/msgbrd to do further research. People like
Pelican, Uniqe, Dive Aruba a lot. I dove Pelican and liked them, but most of the
"big shops" restrict bottom time to "meet dive schedules". I've heard that you
don't have this problem with Clyde at Dive Aruba. If I ever went with a small
group of divers, then I'd most likely reserve his boat for the entire trip for all the
good things I've heard about him.
