Newbie need help here. Will be going to the Philippines in December/January to do some diving. Went to the only two dive shops here in town. Problem is, one shop recommends a 3mm jumpsuit(?) while the other recommends a 1.5mm jumpsuit. Who's right. Also, the wetsuit I buy will also be used in the caribbean for future dives. Thanks for the help, y'all. :)

My vote would be to go for the 3mm suit. A 3mm suit is like your basic black dress........everyone needs one.

Mabuhay!!! (Welcome in Tagolog.....I really had to dredge up the old dead brain cells to remember that one)

I learned scuba in the Phillippines .... let's just say, a long, LONG time ago. (old guy alert)

I tried just swimsuit diving and got cold at depth after multiple dives. 3mm is just about right for the P.I.

3mm is also good for the Caribean.

A shorty would do for either. But I prefer a jumpsuit for protection from the sun and stinging beasties.

Now a fatherly warning.... the P.I. is really unstable right now. It was a little dangerous in places, 30 some odd years ago when I lived there. But it's on the list of places you really want to watch your back now. Kidnapping has almost become a sport in some places. Be careful. Dive safe.

Oh.... there is a Japanese "Betty" bomber about 4 miles southeast of Nueva Vizcaya at about 65 feet on a reef ledge. It was "soft landed" so it sank almost intact. Wings were still attached. It's pretty remote so it was ALL there....instruments and everything untouched....at least it was 30 years ago. If you get down to the Southern Islands, it might be worth trying to hunt down. I don't have an exact location. Ask around if you get down that way.

Wish I could go with you.... I loved the P.I. Great reefs, tons of fish. San Miguel beer:wacko: ...I really miss that beer. The import stuff isn't even close.

Hmm...the 3mm seems to be the preffered choice. I figured it would be but I wanted more opinions especially since one dive shop seems to think 1.5 was ok. I did use a 3mm shorty in the Keys and was a little chilled at times.

Hodgson, I was in the PI last year, mostly in the Manila area and the Romblon province. Will not be venturing any farther south than that. Will probably be limited to diving in Anilao or PG or just dive in the province. Snorkeling there is what drove me to take up diving in the first place. Plus I'm limited to going where I can persuade a relative to go also. I may look Filipino but you'd know I wasn't native the moment I open my mouth :D . I've lost the ability to speak much of the language :( . And you're right, the San Miguel tastes great, also less filling now that they have San Mig Lite. Masarap (Delicious).

Salamat (Thanks), y'all.

Walang ano man (I've almost used up everything I remember....at least the stuff that can be said in polite company)

San Miguel LITE? What is the world coming to?

Have a great time

pala am nasa iu (not sure if that one's right.... I think it means goodby to you.... but I may have just insulted your mother):out:
