All,

I need some advice. The wife and I will be going on vacation for 16 days (end of this month thru middle of May) and we are looking to do some diving with large palegics. What would you suggest Western Australia or Bali? We are both AOW PADI divers and I have a sweet new strobe for snapping pictures. If possible we wanted to do around 15 dives in the 16 days. I appreciate any feedback anyone may have.

Thanks!

Since you specifically said "large pelagics", I'd say W. Oz. This is whale shark season in Exmouth, altho it's all snorkeling. If doing the whaleshark trips, you will be better off shooting natural light - ie, no strobe - because it's bright enough near the surface and because having the strobe hinders your swimming speed a bit. South of Exmouth, there's an area in Coral Bay that is good for mantas. Hereagain, it's primarily snorkeling. As far as scuba diving, the Muir Navy Pier in Exmouth is a fantastic dive site with an unbelievable amount of fish and critters.

I like Bali too, but more so for its little stuff. Yes, there are mantas at some sites on the east/southeast, and at certain times of the year there are mola-molas (usually later in the year and thru October). But in terms of seeing sharks, I think that there's a better chance of seeing them (besides reef white tips or reef black tips) in W. Oz than in Bali.

Another factor to consider might be cost, and if so, then I'd say Bali is cheaper to dive than Exmouth.

Manuel Sam,

Thank you very much. Great info, as it validates what I was thinking. I heard a rumor on this board that you can scuba with whale sharks on christmas island. Is this true? Does anyone know?
