Feedback from our participant's Mom
Kimberly first learnt of Diveheart program from her daughter’s therapist at the centre where she normally goes for her session. A week later, she signed her daughter Meryl for a try out at the pool organised by Diveheart Borneo team and immediately, Meryl fell in love with scuba diving. She was so happy and felt passionate about it. I can still remember clearly how hard it was for me to get her out of the pool, recalled the mom.
Meryl is a nine year old little girl with cerebral palsy that effects her walking. Initially, a friend of Kimberly was worried scuba diving might be dangerous for Meryl at her age. However, the mom felt differently as the team was well trained and certified for such activity.
The continuous scuba therapy sessions has made Meryl more comfortable in water. According to Kimberly, scuba therapy has benefitted Meryl in a lot of ways. She is able to move every part of her body and it gets her to think what she needs to do. Nowadays, she is more alert of her surroundings and feels confident of herself.
Kimberly enjoys watching her daughter dives and what makes it more joyous, Meryl and her siblings would have fun together in the pool after every session. She also said she would recommend scuba diving to her friends as it helps to calm their anxiety, improve their self esteem and makes them imagine the possibilities.
Since Meryl started participating in Diveheart programs, she has set a new short term goal which is to earn her PADI Seal Team membership and to work harder on her physiotherapy so that she can maneuver better in water. Her mother said she will support her daughter’s dream as Meryl looks forward to dive in the open sea one day.
