I use a Halcyon Eclipse 30 SS backplate with a STA (6 lbs insert).
I put about 6 pound of ditchable weight on the waist harness.
I dive with a full 7mm suit in cold fresh water..

my question:

to determine the total weight I'm using, do I need to take in consideration the backplate weight also.( it's about 6lbs)..?

so in my case the total of weight I use is 17 lbs or 11lbs...I'm confused! I always wrote 11 lbs in my logbook....but I forgot I think to add the backplate weight?

Personally I only log the amout of lead I am carrying as weight. Then under comments I list anything in my gear that is different than what I usually use, including exposure protection (dry suit or wet suit), camera (it floats), dive light (it sinks). The weight you need will very depending on the buoyant and non-buoyant stuff you carry on a dive.

So the answer to your question is a little more complex than "is it 17 lbs or 11 lbs".

your logbook is your record. so long as you understand what it means that is all that matters. I make note of gear configuration ie plate, suit, tank type, but only count as "weight" the calibrated pieces of lead.

hey mud! no fair copying me before I hit post

Add in the plate.

P.S. You want an accurate record of weight used for the conditions and the equipment. You might for some reason find yourself with an aluminum plate or someone else's equipment. Best to have the correct total.

perfect, that is why I was wondering. thanks!
because the backplate act as a weight, a non ditchable one but it counts....

of course my question is not about a weight calculation but rather if I add the backplate as a weight....

It's because I'M doing the AOW course with Padi and there is a weight calculation we must do according to the exposure suit..a rough estimate of course...

For example if I need 15 lbs, my backplate = 6lbs and STA= 6 lbs so I need to add 3 lbs on my waist

I think you need to break it down into components in your log because any one of the variables could change.

I would log the backplate 6#
then the STA 6#
then the lead 3#

Now, if you decide you don't need that STA you can quickly come up with the fact that you need 9# of lead. Then again, if you dive with a 2# aluminum plate and no STA you can come up with 13# required.

In our small herd, nobody logs much of anything with regard to equipment Every time we pack to go, there's the question about "how much lead do I need to take". Followed by my mentioning "it should be in your logbook, look it up".

JenCell,

That's exactly correct. The BP certainly counts as non-ditchable ballast that you should include in your log of total weight, since you'll need to account for this weight if you switch gear.

Another point to note if you're switching occasionally between a bp/w and a BCD - most jacket BCDs are buoyant by 2-3 pounds, which means you may need 2-3lb more than what your calculations suggests when you use a BCD.
