I have been looking at the weather on the net regarding Phuket. It says at the moment its cloudy with a chance of rain. I am going in January and wonder if it will still be cloudy with a chance of rain? Also will the viz be affected in south Phuket and phi phi?
Cheers. Also where and what is the chance of seeing a whale shark in the ten days I am there?

You have nothing to worry yourself about - you are going when the weather should be at its absolute best and the coolest (still hotter than the hottest day of a UK summer!).

The weather will be fab, the locals will be fab, the food will be fab, the diving will be fab! And even if by chance it decided to be cloudy on a couple of days it would still be a million percent better than the UK (where I will be unfortunately flying to tomorrow!!!).

Re the whale shark - its hard to say but they are NOT common, despite what you may have heard. Rather than season its best to ask the locals (either just before you arrive, or after you arrive) where one has been seen in the preceeding days, if at all.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!

There are whale shark sighting in Andaman sea every year around Phi Phi, Similan, Richeliue etc but it is not a daily occurence. My impression is that January seems to be a bit early for whale shark season. This year, most sighting occurs around April, as far as I know and it is supposed to be quite late in comparison to recent years. However it never hurt to keep your eyes open and check the deep blue once in awhile.

I can see that Whitehead is already dreading the cold winter in England so everything in Phuket is fab :)
Well, January-February tends to be fab in Phuket:)
Sea can still be a little rough, Feb-March is when the sea is generally calmest but Jan should be fine also.
