My wife and I were there about a month ago. The water temps then were mid 70's like 74, 75 at the surface. Maybe 70 at 40 feet. I was wearing my 3/2 with a 3mm vested hood, and was fine. In fact I really don't think I needed the hood. Most of the dive shops were passing out 5 mils to those who didn't have their own. One day I didn't have mine as I was not planning to dive, so I wore a poor fitting 5 mil. I was comfortable both ways, but didn't dive any deeper than 45ft.

If you haven't committed to any particular dive shop may I recommend Pacific Scuba. We dove with Gabriel Aquila, and thought him to be an excellent intructor and dive master. They all spoke very good english, and were very safe and fun. The whales are great in Banderas Bay right now. If you go that route(Pacific Scuba- they have a website:http://pacificscuba.com.mx), tell them Kerry and Amelia Penner sent you. But whatever, have fun. Anything else, just ask, but I'll be the first to tell you I don't know it all.

I guess I'll just take my semidry ( http://www.carbonos.com/semidry.jpg ) and not have to worry about getting cold whatsoever...and if I do get a little too warm I can simply flush some water through the suit :)

BTW - I'll be in Punta de Mita (40min north of Puerto Vallarta) at the new Four Seasons...I'll have to let everyone know how the diving goes...thanks for the advice though.

My guess is you'll be plenty comfortable with that. It is usually easier to cool off than to warm up, at least that is what I have found. But I don't know anything about where you are going. Let us all know.

Hi.
These are the average viz - temp you can get in PV but i will recommend you to ask your local dive operator about the conditions one week previous to your trip.

Viz: 10 ft - 82 ft (3 - 25 m)
Average Water Temp: 15°C- 59°F (dec - may) to 30°C - 86°F (june - nov)

for whales watching, last week of february is probably one of the best to do that, since the whales are forming groups to swim back to the north, but there are still good chances to see some whales in march.

good luck...
