Its nice to find that other people feel the same way about work for free, and I totally agree with the last post, its the customers who get short changed as most work for free dm's & inst, dont have the experience to properly guide, not all but most of the ones I,ve met have never really dived for themselves, they make up there dives working for free, and in my opinion and its only my opinion until you;ve clocked up a good few dives not guiding or instucting, but for yourself, it is very hard to understand what divers want from a guide, and its often these people that give diving a bad name more through inexperience than anything else.
A good guide can even guide sites they have never been too as its about diver safty, a good set of eyes and common sense, most work for frees would be lost in different conditions, and unless they know a site well they are not comfortable enough to do a good job guiding, for all those I have annoyed with this post, I wrote "most" as there are people working for free that are very good. But in my experience there the ones that come back after a 10m viz dive and with a slight current complaining how difficult it was to look after their divers cause the viz was so bad, or the current was to strong, are work for free's
As you can tell its also a pet hate of mine.
I,ve worked in the industry for 10 years and the standard of dm,s and instructors should be getting better, in my opinion and I,m an opinionated b#&@*d its got worse.
Glad I got that of my chest.
Diving is about having your own time underwater, teaching and guiding is about providing the safest and best possible experience for your divers or students.
