I've been offshore fishing from my Hobie Revo for some time now, going 2-4 miles off shore for tuna and such on a regular basis. I dove a few times with a hookah type setup but with a tank instead of a motor. This was only for lobstering and I'm not comfortable going beyond 30 feet or so with this setup. I completed my open water cert last weekend and am eager to get started with yet another expensive hobby :)

I found a group in SE Florida called 'kayuba' (Kayak Scuba) but it appears inactive. The kayak diving section of this board also seems quiet. I want to learn how to do this! Is there another resource to get started? I have basic questions like: how do you avoid ascending too far from your anchor point, given the fact that the current will sweep you along? Do you tie off to wrecks when diving them or just use a big anchor for all dives? And on and on.

1: you need a flag no matter what - i would attach to the kayak.
2: anchor point? you don't need no stinkin anchor point! drift with the kayak with a line attached to it!

tie to wreck vs anchor? depends on who else with you and current etc.... i don't recommend solo diving especially on wrecks without proper equipment and training...
i won't be able to do any kayak diving myself until July. have an ocean kayak drifter.

Dania & Pompano are my regular launch points so very interested in the clinic but don't have a BCD/regulator yet. I'll look into renting.

So you have a 100' or so rope tied to you & drift, using kayak like a big plastic dive flag float?

Thanks for the info!

I may do some kayack diving this summer. From what I've been told attaching yourself to anything is not advisable. Comments?

would use a reel & line & clip it to the kayak. HOLD the reel :)

personally i would keep the kayak "attached" that way whether drifting or checking out a wreck w/o penetration. i use the same reel that i use on my flag & float.

so yes think of it a big Dive float that is easier for the boats to see ;)

if you do photo/video or spearfishing -- task loading goes up and requires extra attention & care.

plenty of places to rent the gear from --- and i would consider renting from different shops until you find a BC & reg that you like ...
i love my atomic Z2x though...

I think the way you started is the best way to do this. I use a 50' hose attached to the tank in the kayak for dives 30' and above. Using standard scuba equipment just makes this harder then it has to be for shallow dives.

Oh yeah the hookah is great for lobstering or whatever down to 30' but I want to do some deeper stuff now that I'm official. If I can do it & skip the $60 boat ride all the better!

Not to keep going on this, but what if for whatever reason, you drop the reel and the kayack takes off with the current or in the wind that just came up?

I would recommend that you still tow the kayak along with you just as you did when you were surface supplied.
