Thanks MCliffy - your G9 package looks like a sweet deal, but I was going for the G10 and Cannon housing because those are selling under $500 (no strobes of course). I shoot photos on land, so think this would be a good test to see if I can produce the non-macro images I see in my head, and if so to invest the money in a T1i or 7d rig. Hopefully that makes sense...?

If you are looking to produce "non-macro" images a wide angle lens is essential, and you'll need an Ikelite housing for this (on G10 or G9). Its my understanding that Canon's housing will not fit 3rd party wide angle lenses. A strobe is also essential unless you plan on shooting in 15 ft of water or less all the time. Otherwise you will have no reds or oranges in your pictures whatsoever. Because of the way light travels through water, you simply cannot get good underwater results at depth without a wide angle lens and a strobe. It is a little more expensive, but I had the same needs as you, and found that this setup fit those needs perfectly. In fact the reason I am selling is because I just upgraded to a 7D.

Whatever you end up deciding, have fun with it! :beerchug:

This is a purely personal note and I'm sure I'll get a lot of flack over it and comments on my personal lack of ability but here goes. I purchased a Canon G10 and a matching Canon underwater housing brand new from the local camera shop. I was NEVER able to consistently get good macro photos with it. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. This was in my yard taking pictures of flowers. I wanted macros of the insides of the flowers and the various bees and insects found there. I finally gave up and went to the photo shop with my problem. They have an employee there who teaches macro photography at the local college. He had the same problem. We took another brand new G10 out of the showcase and he still had the same problem. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. He tried every possible setting both manual and auto with the same results. I was leaving for Cozumel two days later and had no option but to go ahead and take this setup with me. Sure enough, I had the same problem underwater, compounded by the difficulty of arranging photos properly in that environment. In general, it's a great camera, but I don't recommend it if you want to mostly do macro photography. OK, everybody flame me now, but that was my actual personal experience.
