hey everybody, I'm just another commercial diver wanna be and I need someone to answer a question, sorry if this is the wrong board for this but i could not get a response on the "new to diving" board. well, here it goes, is 29 years old too old to start a commercial diving career. somebody please give me some good news. thanks.

Age is not as important as fitness / endurance.

29 is not to old to start.

I wouldn't think so. Most of us have just about quit spinning our tires and running into walls about that time. At least that's about the time I quit all the childish s*** and started looking to the future. I was in the constuction business for 40-some years and for the last 20 years of it most of the apprentices I hired were so juvenile, weak and useless that I looked forward to employing a guy with a little time under his belt or one who came from a rough background. By rough I mean from a poor family or had some muscle on him. I couldn't believe how useless and pathetic most of the 18-25 year-olds I hired. Now and then I'd get a young military veteran who would hold up his end of it though.

thank you both, thats exactly what i wanted to hear. i am shooting for an August school start at the ocean corp. so untill then i will be running laps around the neighborhood trying to get in the best shape i can. You 2 guys made my day. THANKS. Do you think that Youngs Memorial college would be a good alternative to an expensive com dive school, or is it pretty much a "get what you pay for" thing? Do employers care that much?

Employers do not care all that much about the school, the school gets your foot in the door. The biggest items are listed in Garrobo's post above. They do care whether or not it is an ADCE approved course as these meet the ANSI standard for commercial diving and OSHA recognizes it as well although they do not yet require it specifically.

Youngs would be a good alternative and would save you some money.

If you wrote to Dear Abby, she'd give you the same answer she gave the guy who was 49, and wondered if he was too old for Med School, since he'd be about 56 by the time he was a doctor...

"Well, how old will you be in 7 years if you DON'T go to medical school??"

Good luck.
