We are traveling soon with some friends to spend a week in Cozumel. We plan on doing a couple days of diving and general island exploring so we are looking at getting a rental vehicle. Problem is, I don't know if a VW Bug or a Jeep will hold 4 people AND their diving equipment (personal + BC, Regs, etc..).

Anyone have any insight into if these vehicles will work and if not, what I might want to look at?

Thanks.

Why do you need to carry around your scuba equipment on Coz? Most OPS will pick you up on a pier outside of the resort or hotel. The Jeep, or Bug can be just used for transportation. If you are worried about getting to and from the airport, you can either make a couple trips, or hire a Van at about $8 pp. You can get a van at the airport, have them take you to the hotel, and then go pickup the rental car. Departure is in the reverse order! :D

To answer your question, NO a Jeep or bug will NOT hold four people, and their gear unless you have an unusually small amount of dive luggage.

I agree with Ron. No chance of getting gear and 4 people into any of the rental vehicles commonly available in the area. If you're staying on Coz, don't waste your money on a rental car. Just walk or use cabs.

since I own a VW beetle... I very seriously doubt you can get 4 people and their gear in it.

Maybe you can, but you'll end up with at least the 3 passengers with gear bags in their laps.

I can speak with some authority on this subject, see my web site www.countryvolks.com

the answer is NO!

Now if you could locate a microbus...

LOL.. Thanks for all the quick replies. Well that settles that.

It's been several years since we've been to Cozumel and all I could remember was the Nissan Sentra taxis, but if they have vans, that'll work. Probably will have to call and get them to send a mini-van cab for us for diving as we are staying at a condo and I'm not sure how close it would be to any place we could be picked up. We'll get it figured out.

BTW, Dave. Cool site and service you do.

Thanks again.

What a cool site! I can guarantee that there is no way to get four divers into a new Beetle. I can just manage two divers with minor technical gear into a Golf. Passat Wagon would be a better choice.

put a gavin scooter behind the back seat, tell 4 techies "first one in with all their gear wins it and a years supply of helium" youll get em in there!

Contact the condo owner, or management and ask them about transportation. The taxi's in Coz are EVERYWHERE! :D

Car rental in Coz is expensive. Split four ways it would not be bad, but I think a Jeep is about $80 bucks a day. You could also ask the rental company if they have a station wagon, or a VW with a luggage carrier.
