Well I've only had my drysuit for the past half dozen dives but I think it is causing my nasea and vomiting lately. I only felt nauseated once in the past 50 dives before the drysuit, and that was when I ate chips and gatorade for lunch! But with the dry suit I've vomited underwater two times already.

I suspect the neck seal. I trimmed it correctly, and it doesn't seem too tight - a couple times I've even felt it burp air underwater.

The next thing I am going to try is to keep the seal higher up on my neck. A second thought is that maybe my new hood is too tight. It is definately tighter than the last one, however it doesn't seem uncomfortable.

What do you guys think?

I dont' think it is likely the seal, at least not that it is too tight- might have a latex alergy though- however this is more likely to produce a rash than vomiting.

More likely to me is that you might be overheating causing your nausea.
Alternatively, are you diving in different conditions now that you are using a dry suit?

Really, 2 instances in a dry suit versus 1 in your wet suit isn't really a cause for concern. If you have more instances, try to see if you can't find some other more likely causes.

Good luck.

This made you puke?

Or just nauseous?

Were the previous dives all boat dives? was the most recent bout of nausea from a boat dive or a shore dive?

Mmmmmmmm... I've got the munchies. wonder if I've got some chips & gatorade...

I agree heat is a more likely culprit. I get hot, crabby and slightly queasy when I get overheated.

Consequently in hot weather I set up my gear, then don the drysuit, hood, gloves, etc in a sequence that allows me to get into my ready-to-go gear and get in the water in minimum time and with minimum physical effort. A pre-soaked hood also helps keep you cool while gearing up.

How is your stability when diving in the drysuit? Unless your trim is well adjusted, a dry suit can feel a lot more like you are balancing on a pin than the hanging under blimp feeling you may get with a wetsuit and, in particular, a back inflate BC or wing. Too much air can also make the suit feel unstable. In either case the extra and unexpected movements due to the reduced stability could cause some nausea.

It is far more likely heat induced nausea, do you normally have a tendancy to dehydrate? Is your skin cold and clammy after the dive, or hot and not as sweaty as you'd expect? Also do you get motion sickness on boats? I'm going to side with the other conclusions here in this thread to look at other causes besides the neck seal. It could definitely be related to the dry suit as far as it changing the temperature of your dives. What temperature is the water you dive in, and what type of undergarments and how thick are these? Also what type of dry suit?

Thanks for the replies everyone!

It might be heat, but I feel fine before entering the water. Generally I put my undies on and the drysuit up to my waist and then a few minutes before getting in the water I pull the neck seal over and zip up. A few times I've been really toasty with the undies on (w/o the neck seal on) but it didn't seem to make me feel bad. Underwater I'm actually still a teeny bit cold even though I use weezle extreme undies. I have also been really hot dirt biking, mountain biking, whatever, and it was never a problem.

I've used latex gloves and, um, other things so I don't think I have an allergy to that.

I used a 7mm farmer john wetsuit in the same conditions before the drysuit, which is here in Monterey, 55F water temp. With the farmer john I would get uncomfortably cold on the second dive of the day. I was even slightly cold in 86F water with a 3mm full wetsuit.

With the chips and gatorade thing, it was my fourth shore dive that day, and I had some major heartburn going on. I actually puked right after surfacing on that one. With these recent nausea problems I had no heartburn.

This most recent episode was on a boat dive, but the previous 5 drysuit dives were from shore. On every drysuit dive I haven't felt 100%. And on one shore dive (the second one that day) I puked about 30 minutes into the dive.

It might be my trim! I haven't had really great trim with the drysuit, although it hasn't been bad. I'm not really fighting to keep trim but I don't feel in total control. I do have a BP/W.

I actually drink tons of water before the dive, and I have a p-valve in the drysuit and in the wetsuit I'm not afraid to pee in it. I feel being hydrated is more important. After the dive I'm not particularly clammy or hot. Just a little cold. On one dive I got all suited up and then my buddy forgot something in the car. So I really got toasty on the shore with that one. But the weird thing is that was my best drysuit dive! I still felt slightly queasy but not too bad. We were down for over an hour. After that dive the outside of my undies were all wet and at first I thought my suit was leaking. But it was probably just sweat.

I don't really get seasick, but on this recent boat dive someone lent me their reliefband wrist zapper and I did seem to feel better. But I didn't have any seasickness problems when doing boat dives in a wetsuit.

The drysuit is a DUI CLx450, water temp 55F, and a Weezle extreme undergarment.

Thanks guys.

Umm, where have you been getting your tanks filled since you got the drysuit? Have you had a professional completely drain your tank and do a vis recently? Does the compressor reside next to a freeway? Does it have a 6 month or newer inspection paperwork that the diveshop is willing to show you?

I too was on the boat and while I normally have not been too suceptable to motion sickness was feeling it that day. Long period rollers coming in seemed to throw off my balance just a bit. Also I found the wetsuit was putting pressure on the hollow of my neck right below the adams apple. For me that tends to be the "sweet spot". It tends to make the bad feelings worse.

The tank on this recent dive was filled by the boat, not sure where it was filled. But yeah, I thought this too at first (great minds think alike) however I have had the tanks filled at different shops, and one time both my buddy and I had a fill at the same shop and he felt great. The vis was done back in June on my tanks, and the tank on the boat I don't know.

Hi Kevin, I'm thinking that you're on to something. I wore my hood around the house last night and I noticed it really pulling back on my chin, and tight in the neck. The jaw joint (TMJ) is sensitive and maybe that is pinching a nerve with the pressure. I'm going to try stretching it over a tank and see if that helps.

Also I ordered one of those Reliefbands. Can't hurt.
