Why is the vis so bad in your toilet before flushing and so good afterwords? Stuff gets suspended in the water more in some areas than others. ;)

look back 100 years at the industrial age. Look at all the textile factories and harbors in the jersey, new york and other new england areas. Then think about what was goin on in the bahamas. Lots of nasty in jersey, not so much in the bahamas. Its gotten a little better, but there's still way more crap goin into the waters in dirty jersey than there are in the islands.

On reason for bad vis is that there is a lot more biomass in the north atlantic than in the reef environments of the caribean. Also, the seas tend to be rougher so more stuff gets stirred up.

Why is the NJ water green and the Carib water blue?

It's the Gulf Stream.

After the toilet bowl crack I had to find the real reason. It's because of phytoplankton and the chlorophyll they contain.

it seems the food chain starts in places with less than great vis.

You found the correct answer before I saw the post. There is no excuse for ignorant remarks by the uninformed. :no The waters off the New Jersey coast are as clean as any - as you stated the viz and color is nature. If one wants proof of the cleanliness, observe the pelicans nesting or the dolphins and even the whales that are just off shore. Pelicans don't nest near dirty water nor will you find dophins playing in the pollution.
