Hello, I have been a lurker for a while. I did a search on Virgin Gorda but was wondering if any one had and specific comments? We are looking at VG for our 2009 trip. ABC's have been some of our best trips so just looking for any insight. TIA!

A group of us were there in 2006, I can't imagine it's changed much. It's a really quiet, peaceful area. Probably more goats and roosters than people. No crime that we heard of. The Villa we stayed in didn't even have exterior locks. Manager said they've never needed them. I left all my u/w video gear, laptop, lots of cash out in the open all week, nothing was touched.

We did all our diving with DiveBVI. They were great. Just a nice group of people to dive with. One of the few dive outfits that really provide the service they describe on their site, we dropped our gear off the first day and after that everything was stored and ready for us on the boat all week. VGdiver here is Jeff, their GM.

Took us to all the good dives, the Rhone, Indians, Dogs, etc. They have several dive boats including a new (2006) 46' Newton. They pickup at several locations on VG, their main shop in "town", Marina Cay (island) and Leverick Bay. Second shop at Leverick Bay also.

Other must-do's on VG. The Friday Night Buffet at Leverick Bay Resort. Everyone goes, tourists, locals, sailors etc. Do dinner one night at the Rock Cafe outside on their multi-terraced patio. Pricey but worth it.

And of course there's snorkeling at the Baths.

Virgin Gorda is really spread out so you'll want a car. Most of the activity is near town to the south or the far north end. The middle is just a few resorts along the water and private houses. Lots of open land.

It's a sailing destination first so a lot revolves around that. You can also daytrip over to Tortola - at least when we were there, it was possible via the ferries. It's also doable to fly in/out of St. Thomas and take the ferry over to VG. The ferries are fast and run often.

PM if you have other questions, I may not follow this thread.

Hi!

Have to second everything Steve writes.

We have been to VG four times, and it's our favorite place. Peaceful, not to crowded but yet still enough things to do and see.

Have been diving and snorkeling with Dive BVI and I took my AOW cert with them in May. They are nothing but wonderful and we have never had anything to complain about. I can highly recommend Dive BVI. Have been diving the Rhone, the Dogs, Ginger island and a couple of other sites. We have also snorkeled with them (on their afternoon dives they take snorkelers also).

We have always stayed at Guavaberry Spring bay vacation homes. A lovely place with a number of small 1-2 bedroom tree houses, which are basic but clean, with kitchen and a deck with water view from all of them. They are situtated 5 min from Spring Bay (near the Bath). Management at Guavaberry also great to deal with and it's resonably priced. Guavaberry also manages a number of villas, if you want more upscale accommodation or need more than 2 bedrooms. They can use all the service that Guavaberry guests do (office incl internet access, booking of all different kind of things, commissary with lots of food/drinks to buy, beach towels etc).

I have a lot of Virgin Gorda pictures (including underwater pics) on my photosite (see link in my signature) if you want. You are also free to PM me.

You should not go to VG if you want casinos and night life (live music at some restaurants), shopping or lots of shore diving. But there are enough restaurants to visit and some great small water holes, like the Mad Dogs.

Hope this helps!

Virgin Gorda is where people from the BVI go for their "internal holidays". It is very pleasant.

The guys at Dive BVI are excellent and should take good care of you.

Give us a shout if you have any questions. We've had an awesome summer! Hammerheads (yes, that's plural), huge turtles and even Caribbean devil rays. Not too shabby!

Hi Jeff,

I'll just hop on here with a couple of questions. Did Hurricane Ike damage much out there? Houses, etc? Also, what's the Viz / Current / Temp like in early June?

Thanks,
David

Hurricane Ike? You must mean Omar. It pretty much skirted the BVI by with minimal damage.

Nope, no damage from Omar. We were lucky. Diving really wasn't affected...viz was clear after a couple of tide changes. Water temp runs 80-83 through the summer. Great time to come as the seas are pretty flat.

Jeff
