Blanket restrictions on US Gov't employees to Playa Del Carmen are lifted by US State Dept. This is via Fox News as of this afternoon. In addition, the US Counsular office in Playa will be open next Monday. and there are no longer restrictions on ferry travel. This just reinforces my contention all along that the ferry wars are over.

PS let the bag drag resume!

According to my friend in the US State Dept the restrictions to Playa are still in effect but have been pulled back to specific neighborhoods and the ferry restrictions are still in place.

Currently on the state department site:

Mexico Travel Advisory

‘U.S. government personnel are prohibited from travel to Centro, Calica, Gonzalo Guerrero, Quintas del Carmen, and Villas del Carmen neighborhoods of Playa del Carmen. These neighborhoods are bordered by Avenida Benito Juarez, 50 Avenida Sur (Highway 307), and Calle 34 Norte. U.S. citizens should avoid those neighborhoods until further notice. U.S. government personnel are authorized to travel to resort areas in Riviera Maya including those near Playa del Carmen that are outside the restricted neighborhoods of this alert.

U.S. government personnel are still prohibited from using ferry services between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel until further notice. U.S. citizens should not use ferry services operating between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

There are no restrictions on U.S. government employees for travel to other parts of Quintana Roo state, including tourist areas such as: Cancun, Cozumel, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya’

This pretty much covers the entire downtown tourist areas between the HI way 307 and the beach from the ADO station on Juarez (north side of the street so it is in the exclusion area) to about 8 blocks north of Av Constituyentes. This is pretty much the same info as the news reports. Basically the primary areas that caters to tourism are still off limits to government employee's , the outer neighborhoods and business areas west of hi way 307 are no longer prohibited. Google maps shows the consulate as being in a strip mall between Calle 29 and 27 sur on the west side of hi way 307 so it is outside of the government employee restricted area by about 100 feet.

The most detailed article I've seen yet is in Mexico News Daily. Mostly stuff we've seen reported here and there, just summed up in one place. They outlined some security measures.

The Federal Police announced in a statement that 60 tactical personnel have been deployed to mount a security operation in Quintana Roo, concentrating on the ferry terminals in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen.

The officers, accompanied by a canine unit trained in the detection of firearms, explosives and drugs, will conduct inspections of terminal buildings and vessels.

The state government announced it will invest 50 million pesos (US $2.68 million) to install new security equipment at the two terminals during the next two weeks.

It seems Mexico is finally taking the action that I think a modern First World country would have taken immediately. I wonder if it is a coincidence that this comes at the same time the State Dept. pulls back on it's warnings?
