I was interested in a Uwatec smartcom. I do know there was a recall. Are the "new" ones all fixed and how would you know if you purchased one that it was not affected by recall?? Thanks Steve

This is according to the UWATEC recall info in Dutch (the other languages don't provide any info):
- the recall affects units which were produced before June 30, 2003
- the recall units have serial#s of 0306 or lower (the "good" ones have serial#s 0308 or higher)
- the SmartPro recall units have the serial# engraved on the left side of the screen (the "good" ones have it on the right side)
- the SmartCom recall units have the serial# engraved on the right side of the screen (the "good" ones have it on the left side).
If you know the serial# you can of course also call UWATEC.

Yes. The new SmartComs have the latest software and the older SmartComs should have been replaced by now.

i am diving a uwatec smart com and totally love it. the beeping can be annoying but it helps keep me alert when i get lost staring at fish or playing with an octopus. i like a lot of the features are settable you can set a lot of the alarms. the included software is awesome. the other cool feature is you can link it to your coputer via an infrared port, unlike the oceanic which will cost you about 100 us dollars for the link cable. i love my computer and my dive buddies all like my dive computer enough to go out and get them for themselves. i was also concerned about the recall and i called scubapro to check and they reassured me that as long as you are buying from an authorized retailer you will not be getting a recalled unit. he was also sure to mention if you buy from those who are not authorized uwatec/scubapro dealers you are taking a chance.

I had a computer that was recalled, and I sent it in. I was given a brand new unit. OK, the recall addressed an issue that occurred in a very slight number of computers. SP stepped up to the plate and recognized the problem, set up the recall, and replaced the computers sent in for recall.

To my knowledge no SmartComs, post recall, have had issues and are safe to dive.

Off the top of my head, the number of SmartComs recalled that actually would have failed, is minimal. Very minimal.

I have no qualms about diving my SmartCom.

Happy Diving!!

Some tiny glitch where occassionally, a unit could just freeze underwater... Would not update any info. They figured that was a bad thing! So the replaced them all. It was just a bad part on the circuit board.
