Hey gang -

A little background...

New diver, did all my initial training using my buddies Scubapro rig, I ended up going with the same gear for many reasons.

I became familiar and fond of his Uwatec Aladin Tec 2G 3 Console unit, but I've heard that it's been discontinued? (attached is a pic of the unit)

If so, can anyone recommend a similar unit? I liked its same side 3 gauge set up, as well as the ease of use.

Thanks in advance!

Not true.

The 3 gauge console with Tec 2G is still showing in the 2010 US catalog.

However, even if it were not still cataloged, you'd still have several options. Generally, what is in the catalog are suggested packages for a given market. For example if I wanted, I could order a Mk 2 Plus with an A700 second stage. Consequently, even if not cataloged a US dealer could still:

1. Special order the Tec 2G in a console, or
2. Order the SPG, compass, console and computer separately, or
3. Order the Tec 2G as well as a 3 gauge console without the depth gauge, or
4. Order both the 3 gauge analog console and the Tec 2 G and then credit you for the depth gauge he replaces with the computer.

If all the individual parts needed are still stocked and sold, any combination of them is still possible. It wouldl just be a case of telling your dealer what you want and then ask him to figure out the cheapest way to get it for you.

----

If your dealer is telling you it is discontined, show him the catalog.

On the other hand, if you are looking to get one on-line, then availability depends entirely on the ability of the on-line retailer to get one through grey market channels and it would not be unheard of to get mis information in order to sell you something they have in stock.

Thanks for the reply.

I actually e-mailed my dive shop, and the owner actually has 2 in stock and apparently can still get them for awhile until the new model lanuches?

Either way, I have one on hold. Thanks for the help. The information you provided was enlightening!

Save some money and go with an Aladin Prime Nitrox Computer, its cheaper, uses the Same Algorithim (ZH-L8) in essence the only difference is that one is a 2 gas programmable to 100%. You say that your a new diver? No need to jump to a Tec comp quite yet, unless you'd like to transistion into that some day.. Any hope this helps, Safe Diving!

I can't seem to find the model, do you have a link?

I'm in the mindset of buying higher quality equipment that will serve my needs as my training progresses. My goal right now is to dive as much as possible and work towards a public service/rescue diver cert (FF/EMT), and more down the road.

I'm not a big fan of wrist mounted units. I tried a few on and didn't like the feeling (hate to wear watches as well lol).

I'll give the opposing viewpoint. Get the Tec 2G. It is not that much more expensive than the Aladin Prime and you will not outgrow it if you do end up using higher percentage deco gasses down the road. And even if you end up diving trimix, it makes an excellent bottom timer in gauge mode.

I am not a console fan for lot so reasons some of then related to technical diving and others related to seeing far too many of them functioning as reef wrecking balls on the ends of hoses, retractors or clips. And most of the computer functions are more usable on your wrist than on a consols plus you can look at it with no special need to break your trim or add extraneous movement under water (a SAC killer). But the good news is that the Scubapro SPG is brass and glass and the Tec 2G fits in a good wrist mount from Scubapro or a great one from Deep Sea Supply.
