I am trying to change the battery in an old Aladin Pro. I have found and followed, to the best of my ability, the steps outlined in various videos etc.
  1. I was able to remove the old battery and solder in a new one and connect the red wire to it.
  2. Upon performing the battery reset the screen flashed with all display items on for a few seconds, as I believe it was supposed to do.
  3. But then, the screen went dead. No display, I was unable to use the contacts to turn the computer on and a subsequent attempt to reset it got no reaction.
  4. About 20 minutes later it suddenly beeped and activated to its in-dive screen.
  5. This "dive" continued for some time, the highest minute count I saw was 200 or so. Pretty long dive:-) However at some point when I looked it was back at 16 minutes, whether the timer ran out and started over or this was a new dive, I do not know.
  6. The next day the screen had gone blank again. I have not been able to reset the battery or get any reaction out of it.
  7. I left it for 24 hours, and have now disconnected the battery. But I have no "ERR" screen or anything, it's just blank.
If anyone has any ideas on whether the situation is salvageable, or what else I might try, I'd much appreciate it.

What model are you talking about? The 1st or 2nd generation of Aladin Pro.
The 1st generation does not require oil while the 2nd gen does.
Step (3) is normal for the 2nd Gen mod but then you should be able to start the computer by the usual wet contact on those two points.
I had experienced it once or twice before when the computer would not be started.

Repeat the whole process again. Make sure "ERR" is shown when you had reconnect the battery.
I assumed you had filled up the oil if it is the 2nd gen.

Good luck.

Pretty sure he is talking about first generation. As said, just do it again. Mine still works if I put a new battery in it. Not sure why I would as there are far better computers around now that cost far less in actual dollar terms than I paid for it back in 1991.

It's second generation, had oil in it.
Wet contact on two points didn't restart it after the battery reset.

Whilst I have disconnected the wire from the battery, I haven't taken the new battery I put in out yet. It's nicely soldered in and I was hoping to avoid having to do that again. But I have no err message, so I guess I'll have to take it out completely and start again.

Thanks very much for your input, I do appreciate it. Hoping I can salvage it. It has been sitting around unused for almost 20 years, but now I am emotionally invested:-)

I need a backup for a course, just thought I'd give it a shot. And now I find myself stubbornly wanting to make it work:-) It's second gen by the way.
