Hi Folks. Yes, I'm an UW photography newb but was wondering if anyone has used a coolpix 4600? I use this on land and it would be nice not to have to purchase another point and shoot. Thanks in advance.

I have been happy with my Coolpix 4600/5600 UW pix. It is nice for a small lightweight setup for traveling. I got a housing for around $200.

Outstanding. Thanks much. Also, have you considered or used a strobe or other lenses?

No, I have not tried adding strobes or lenses. Sometimes I have used my backup light to provide extra light with decent results. I'm not sure if adding lenses is possible with the Nikon housing I have, although I haven't really checked that option out. I have considered upgrading to a DSLR so I could use different lenses and have manual focus. But considering the portability of the 5600 and the cost of a nicer camera w housing, I will just stick with what I have for a while.

Hey, I've got a Coolpix 5600 with a Fantasea housing. Haven't gotten either of them wet yet, though.

The camera doesn't seem to be very light-sensitive on the surface... shots can turn out blurry if the lighting is less than bright. How does the camera work underwater? Doesn't sound as if you use the built-in flash...

As you mention, blurry shots are an issue with this camera, above and below. But I usually can get things set up to get clean shots. But it does require a steady hand camera to take low light shots, unless you are macro close to the subject and use the flash.

I usually just use the built-in flash on the camera, recently I have started holding a back-up light to provide extra light for macro shots, especially for low light shots. I am especially happy with some of my macro shots with the 5600, although it took some trial and error.

A while back, I compared the Fantasea housing with the Nikon housing and it looked like the Fantasea did not have control buttons for mode selection, ON/OFF, macro on/off, and flash control. But I have not verified that by actually holding a Fantasea housing in my hands.I consider having access to those controls important to get good UW shots. For example, to take shots of a big wrasse 25 feet away, I want the flash off to avoid lighting up all the particles right in front on the camera. And then I want to take a pic of a nudi, so I switch to macro and turn on the flash to get a good shot.

Yeah, I don't think the early version of the Fantasea housing for the Coolpix 4600/5600 had those controls.

But then they added them; my housing has them. Good thing.

The only controls you can't access with the housing are the backwards scroll/self-timer, and the trash button.

Oh, yeah, and the On button still isn't accessible. I guess they figure you can set the go-to-sleep time beforehand, then just half-depress the shutter to wake it up again. Fair enough.

And the mode dial isn't accessible, but that would be hard to do through a housing.

I think they were trying to keep the number of buttons to a minimum.

Glad to hear the Coolpix can take acceptable photos underwater!

Thanks, Marek.....i think I may continue researching other options. Sounds like the 4600 could do the trick, but if I'm going to spend money for a housing, I may consider something different. I thank eveyone again for your comments and relating your experiences.
