Divers,

I have personal interest in diving the USS Bass. My uncle lost his life 17 August 1942 on the Bass. This wreck now rests in 160 feet of water off the coast of New England. Any information on diving the Bass or local charter boats taking divers to this wreck would be greatly appreciated…

Please contact me regarding your uncle who lost his life aboard USS Bass (SS-164). We would like to place a personal memorial page for him on our website, "On Eternal Patrol."

Thank you for the opportunity to place my uncle's information on your memorial page. I have sent information and photos to your web site. My photo page has images of the Bass as well.

Again thank you...

SUBMARINE VERSE OF THE NAVY HYMN

"Bless those who serve beneath the deep,
Through lonely hours their vigil keep.
May peace their mission ever be, Protect
each one we ask of thee. Bless those at
home who wait and pray, For their return
by night or day."

Thank you very much for adding my uncle's information to On Eternal Patrol. My father is proud to see this memorial for the sailors of the US Navy.

I have also found a DVD on the USS Bass "The Wreck Hunters Dive to the Wreck of the USS Bass" This DVD is available at Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more and Wreck Diving Books

"Lord God, our power ever more, whose arm doth reach the ocean floor,
Divine with our men beneath the sea; traverse the depths protectively.
O hear us when we pray, and keep them safe from peril in the deep.
Lord, guard and guide the men who man the submarines that guard our land.
Be with them always night and day, in quiet depths or roaring spray.
O hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril on the sea.

Forget Howard, nothing wrong with his boat, probably one of the cleanest and safest boats on Long Island. BUT he is based in Point Lookout which is close to a hundred miles from the Bass. Additonally just checked his site, he has 08 schedule up and he is not going out that way at all. Eagle's Nest Wreck Diving Schedule

On the other hand, Sea Turtle is home ported in Montauk and does the Bass fairly frequently. Of course for this dive he I believe he required Trimix cert. I knew Howard was a run from there,he used to do overnights out to Montauk..I hve not been on the boat in a few years now thou..

sea turtle goes here rather often, also some boats from Ct. ,but a longer trip. call capt. chuck at sea turtle- great boat

Atlantis Dive Charters out of New London, Ct. goes out to the Bass 4 or 5 times a season. This is a great dive I have had 60 feet vis on this dive late in the season.
to contact Atlantis go to his dive site.

Capt. Bill Palmer makes trips to the Bass wreck.

I have been diving with Bill for more than thirty years and always have had a good time.:):)
