Looking for an ballpark figure for how much airfare would be to fly roundtrip from the USA to Australia.

There are some sweet deals. The 900 is about the best we have really seen. Qantas has a 1800 that includes 14 nights, Sydney, Cairns, etc + accomodations.

You don't see too many consolidator deals to Oz. But we use Austravel for most of our trips. We had to book a last minute trip there JFK-SYD-Adelaide return for 1750 US with a 3 day advance. That is not a bad price. We've done this trip 6-9 time and it averages about 1500-2000 pp. Keeping in mind that we go past Sydney so that adds up. Just going to Sydney would be much cheaper.

Now with Virgin Blue in operation, there are more competitive prices internally in Oz. I would check them out if you want to do some city hopping. Qantas is loosing some market to them so they too are dropping their internal fares as well.

Depending one your time/money, etc. there are options beside Qantas, ANZ and UAL from LAX/SFO. You can go Thai, Singpore, Cathay, etc. to Asia and them jump down. There are some amazing deals going to Asia at the moment. Get a few dives in Thailand or Fiji and continue the trek.
