Upgrade Canon 1-55 kit lens

I'm using a Canon D200 and 18-35 kit lens mainly for underwater, I am using the 18-55 kit lens with a port and am generally happy with it but for the close up focus, it just isn't quite sharp enough. Can someone recommend a replacement lens, it needs to be the approximate size as the 18-35 to operate inside the dome port.

What housing and dome are you using?
