I have a question i haven't been able to find an answer to by searching Google and i hope someone can answer it here.

I have 4 xs scuba steel hp 119 tanks and they go out of hydro in about a year. I have never filled them and have had them sitting in climate controlled storage. I have access to a fill station and I'm wondering if i decide to use them for the first time after the hydro expires, is it safe or does the steel go bad even though it hasn't been filled or exposed to corrosion. I know shops won't fill them but i can fill them myself if i want to use them.

Thanks in advance for any feed back

Get them hydroed. Then you will know.

Unless you like to mess with air pressure that can cut your limbs off...

They need a visual inspection to ensure no rust / corrosion.

When you say you never filled them, you mean not at all? Zero pressure (or 15 psi standard 1 atmosphere)? Valves in? Closed?

Chances are they are fine, but if there is any chance that moisture got in (even in a climate controlled storage), then they should be inspected.

I assume that you do know that water, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide don't belong in your tanks. How can you be sure that this will be the case?

From your post, it sounds like you just know someone who has a compressor. We all know someone with a compressor. I wouldn't let my tanks get near the idiot. YMMV...

Kwinter,

Thanks for the reply. They haven't been filled at all and don't have valves installed, just the plastic screw in caps with the moisture eaters in them. I can vip the tanks and I'll o2 clean them if I decide to use them, I'm just wondering if there's any need to hydro them if I don't plan on having them filled at a shop.

Lowviz,

Wow, what a useless response, that didn't have anything to do with my question and I don't know where you get off calling someone and idiot. And for your info I would be filling the tanks not my friend, I'm a certified trimix blender and have filled thousands of tanks over the years but i've never ran into a tank that was out of hydro that had never been used.

Your response had puzzled me for a bit, obvious to me now. What I wrote can be read two different ways. Allow me to rephrase:

We all know someone with a compressor. I wouldn't let my tanks get near the idiot that I know. YMMV...

Still holding to it, nobody that you know...
