Here's a picture I took last week in the Sea of Cortez, of a mystery creature most likely related to sea fans or gorgonians.

MysteryCoral.jpg

This was shot at about 30 feet, though I saw these at a variety of depths. This one is about a foot across. The branches are firm, but slightly flexible. What struck me most was the coloration. At first I wondered if it was bleaching, but I saw a number of others with similar color pattern, so I think that's just the way it grows. I didn't think to photograph a closeup of the polyps.

Any ideas what it is?
