Actually the Yucatan peninsula basically has no surface rivers to drain the more than 5 feet of rain that falls each year. This ran water flows to the Gulf of Mexico and to the Caribbean sea via the underground river systems.

A good way to learn more about this is to experience a cavern dive while visiting the Mayan Riviera.
