underwater distance measuring device

Looking for a very accurate (1 foot to 20 foot range) underwater distance measuring device, like a stand-alone rangefinder, or something like that, depth rated to about 100 feet. We need something that will show actual distance (as if we used a tape measure) and can be read easily. Anyone know of anything off the shelf?

There is such a device but I dont know where to find it. Size of a small torch LCD display. I would quite like one myself for an up coming project.

Why not just take a spool and mark "inches" and "Feet" on it? By the time you have wrote your measurements down, your buddy can move the setup to the beginning of the next measurement. Much Cheaper......

i marked my reel line in 1 foot increments, as it turns out, one revolution on the handel is 1 foot of line.

Geologists and surveyors use long tape measures on a reel. The plastic ones hold up well enough underwater that I've seen marine biologists using them when they do transects.
