Under Pressure, The Final Voyage of Submarine S-5 by A.J. Hill
The Free Press (Simon and Schuster Inc.) 2002. ISBN 0-7432-3677-7
HC 239pg's with B/W Photos.

This book chronicles the 1920 sinking/rescue of the American sub S-5 off the eastern US seaboard. The S-5 went down in 180ft of water when an air induction valve was left open during a training crash dive. A well written story that takes you inside the sub where Captain "Savvy" Cooke and crew laboured to attempt to raise and then drill through the pressure hull before assistance arrived from above. You really gain a sense of the desperate situation they faced and the courage they exhibited in order to persevere and survive. Also some interesting background info on early US Navy submarine development.
