OK, I've now done 12 dives and since taking up diving I've noticed a strange side effect; I now find that when ever I say OK to anyone, it's often accompanied by a nice clear hand signal!
Is this a common affliction and can I expect any perculiar side effects as the number of dives clocks up?

yes. also expect many "safety stop depth" hand signals when you stop to look at anything for an extended period of time throughout your day. you may also look at your imaginary guages for remaining psi during a long conversation.

You may also find yourself inventing new hand signs for things. My personal favorite is "out of brains" (slash hand across forehead.)

Wait till you're in a loud restaurant or bar with some other divers and you thumb it when you're ready to go...

Whenever I see someone making the "horn" sign (index finger and pinky), I want to switch gases.

It was a struggle for me in class to get used to the ok signal--I'm used to giving a thumbs up. However, now I notice myself giving people the ok signal all the time. Someone yells my name, I turn and signal "ok!" Teacher asks a question in class, I signal ok and then answer. Its ridiculous. The other day swimming in my pool (not for dive practice, just screwing around) after doing a cannonball, I gave the "ok!" signal to the boat (touch tips of fingers to head like you were stretching your arm).

I haven't yet checked an imaginary SPG, but I often do suddenly think "oh junk, I haven't check my gauge recently!" but usually only within a few days of diving.

Don't forget the "low on brains" signal (fist on forehead)

You have nothing to worry about until you catch yourself using hand signals while talking on the phone ...
