I have a SL3. On the butt of the light it says "Press to unlock ring" with a arrow pointing away from the center. I have tried pressing to remove on several occations without any luck. What "RING" gets unlocked? Is it to remove the D-ring on the back?

Yes, you are right. It refers to releasing the little d-ring from the locked-down position.
