On the last day of my dive vacation, I found myself faced with a choice. Should I spend $75 for a DVD of my last two dives, or do two more dives? I'd come to the end of my budget and couldn't do both.

I chose the DVD, and shared it with family and friends.

As a result, two good friends have signed up for their OW classes, beginning in June. They'd been considering certification for years, but seeing the DVD closed the deal.

On top of that, now my kids bring home books on sharks, underwater sea creatures, and Jacque Cousteau (in addition to Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and the like).

I think it was $75 well spent.

I'd have killed to do two more dives, though.

Special thanks to Scuba Drew, videographer, of Oahu.

The videos are nice. If you think they're expensive, consider what it would cost you to film them yourself. I don't think they give away digital video cameras with u/w housings. And the ones I've seen were really well done.

What's to prevent you from suiting up and diving right now? Go GET 'EM!!!

Absolutely nothing. And I will. It's going to be quite a while before I can get back to Hawaii, though, hence the weight of the decision... two more dives in 77 F. water with 100' vis, or a DVD?

I'm viscerally drawn to Hawaii, and tropical diving is a wonderous, meditative experience for me. I went through terrible withdrawal symptoms after we left... I call it Tropical Depression.

Still, I don't regret the decision. I had 10 great dives, and I came back with timeless proof. I persuaded two land-lubbers to get involved in the sport, which will bring more opportunities for local diving, and perhaps multi-family trips to tropical sites. We'll train 'em here in the low-vis, 46 F waters of the Puget Sound (last week's temp), and someday maybe they'll come to feel the same way about Hawaii as I do.

In the meantime, I'll keep everyone (myself included) pumped with that DVD.

That's right... I think Drew told me his was a $5000 rig? Not sure. I think Scuba Drew Video Works does an excellent job, if you find yourself on Oahu. Check him out, www.scubadrewvideo.com.
