tulum dive shops

Hi, I'm a newbie - 1st time here. We are leaving the day after Christmas and going to Tulum. We did not get a dive trip planned but want to do some diving. Any suggestions on places to work with. I am not finding a lot of info on dive centers in Tulum. Thanks

Im going in Jan. the only dive shops i could find is maya diving. they run out of dreams tulum. thats the resort we are going to be staying at.

There are a couple dive shops right in Tulum. In fact, they are across the street from each other. They are both on the corner of 307 and Coba Road. The San Francisco de Asis grocery store is on the 3rd corner in a small plaza with a bank, Hertz and an internet cafe.

You should be able to walk in and get what you need once you get there. There is also Aquatech Dive shop located at Villa DeRosa about 15 minutes north of Tulum on 307 at the dirt road turn labeled AVENTURAS AKUMAL just north of Bahia Principe Resort. If you use Aquatech ask for Marika and her husband (his name escapes me at the moment). They are wreck and cave divers from Scotland who are working their way across Central & South America while on sabbatical from their jobs in Scotland.

If you are looking for cavern or cave diving, try Robbie Schmittner http://www.xibalbadivecenter.com
If you want reef diving, you are better of at Cozumel, if you want to stay in Tulum (and I know I would) try Puerto Aventuras for your dives.

I'd recommend Chris Stanton in Tankah Bay (http://www.luckyfishdiving.com/). He's about 7km North of Tulum. He can take you to the Cenotes and the reef both of which were some of the best diving we've done. Really nice guy. Very personal/competent service.

If you venture farther south you can try diving at DreamTime diving at Costa Maya (www.dreamtimediving.com). This assumes you have a car. Diving is very inexpensive, the folks are great, and getting there isn't tough. The actual town is Mahahual.
