Has anybody heard about an outbreak of multi-drug resistent tuberculosis in Chuuk? The Guam government is talking about quarantining people from that island. I'm supposed to be there next week. I need to decide very soon if I shouldn't go.

Outbreak?? There has always been multi-drug resistent TB in this part of the world. My wife see TB patients at the local hospital. They stop taking "western meds " half way throught treatment because they are feeling better or they go to their local witch doctor for treatment and he tells them to stop taking the "western meds"
Unless you are sleeping with 20 locals in a one room house while in Chuuk don't worry about getting TB. I have lived on the Islands for over six years and that is the least of my concerns. While in Chuuk it is more of a concern how to keep the beer cold!
Enjoy your trip and I wait to see a trip report.

Hi, I lived in the FSM for 3 years but just moved to Palau. Some Chuukese were quarantined in June or July and anyone diagnosed with that particular strain of TB was placed on a restricted travel list. If you are on a live-aboard or staying at one of nicer resorts, you should not have any exposure. They have long and frequent power outages so make sure you are staying at a resort with a generator and I would discourage you from going anywhere outside the resort area after dark.

Thanks, guys. I'm leaving for Tokyo and then the Blue Lagoon today. Figure they won't have any trouble if I haven't already heard about it. PM me separately and I'll send a link to my blog. (Don't want to post it on a public board.)

Looking forward to this trip! :-)
