My Canon SD1000 is giving me this "memory card error" that isn't allowing me to use the camera. Any thoughts appreciated. Since I have an underwater housing for it, I'd like to be able to keep using it.

Have you tried a different memory card?
Have you tried your "faulty" card in a computer?

is the SD card a lot newer than the camera? old cameras don't play well with new SD cards if they are too high of a density for them to support correctly

I had the same issue and the camera wouldn't format. Put it into a computer and format the card there then back to the camera.

If all the above does not work then I'd try a full factory reset of the camera.

SD cards are cheap - once they start acting up, replace them. Flash memory has a finite lifespan, so treat them as a wear item.

Even better - pick up two, and train yourself that the camera is never left without a card. Pull the one out that you just shot, replace with another one. Helps avoid the "oops I forgot a card" situation...
