My wife and I are taking a trip to Playa Del Carmen in june. We will be staying at the Hacienda Tres Rios resort just north of PDC. I have been trying to decide on a good dive operator , but I still am confused because there are quite a few to chose from. I being recently certified back in september, could use some good adive on a operator that would accomodate my experience level the best!! This will be my first ocean dive. I also would like to do some cenote diving!

Hi! What a great place to do your first ocean dive!
Scuba10 sounds like it would be a goood fit for what you're looking for. We accomodate all levels of diving experience and skill. Plus, as we are a relatively small dive shop, we are able to give individualized attention. Our diving group doesn't exceed 6 people, including instructors. We also offer some amazing cenote dives from our shop.
Best of luck in your search! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send us a message!

Another good dive shop is Phocea, located in down town Playa del Carmen. They have daily ocean trips to Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, as well as cenote trips. I will definitely recommend you to do some ocean diving firts, before trying the cenotes, in order to work in your buoyancy and feel more confortable while cavern diving.
Cheers

I can recommend Scuba10. I dove with these guys in December. It feels more like a group of friends than a business. Irene and Gerrardo know the area really well. Gerrardo usually leads the cenote dives and likes to get an early start. I dove Dos Ojos with him last year and we arrived at the site at 8 am, an hour before official opening time. They let us in anyways and we had the place all to ourselves for about an hour. Irene lead a good Bull Shark dive, no chumming, Just natural environment observation.

Hi, yes there is alot of dive shops, some great shops, some good shops, I have been diving with a few of them. I don`t believe in saying bad things about anyone, so let me just say, that some are alot better then others when it comes to new divers. Being a new diver, you have to consider how you are going to enter the water. Alot of new divers can't handle the small boats, the back roll entry is not for everyone, my wife can't do it, also sea sickness is a factor in small boats. I would recommend procea myself, there website is Phocea | Centre de plongée sous-marine Padi | Playa del Carmen | Mexique, I personally know these people, dive with them regularly, and can make sure you get a deal and looked after, if you are interested. I have all the dive shops listed on my wedsite (houses for sale, Real Estate In Playa Del Carmen, Mexico Dreams Realty International Home) for the area, it not finished yet, but have a look if you have a min. You will see my shark video there, which I don't recommend you do at your level. Phocea also offers conote dives, cozumel trips, they are alittle bit more money then the other companies, but I believe in paying for quality. The boat is large, and ladders for getting back into the boat are excellent, and very high quality staff. I am a commercial diver, surface supply, as well as a divemaster, so I notice everything about a company when it comes to diving. Most people don't factor into play alot of things, and the try to save 10 bucks, and use a boat that is not equipped with proper first aid, oxygen aid, and proper ladder system, as well as a qualified captain, as there was a boat that sank from Scuba Caribe a few months ago. Please fell free to ask me any questions you wish about the area.

Take care

John

Do you have more info on the sinking of Scuba Caribe? I was on one of their boats in Nov 2009 and am just curious as to the circumstances of the sinking.
