This is our first trip to Grand Cayman. We booked the trip with the LDS. It was originally planned for a quick 5 day trip but we decided to make it 7 nights.

We were a little apprehensive traveling on the Sunday after Thanksgiving but decided to do it. We got to the airport in Denver 2 hours early. There was plenty of time for security and things were off to a good start. Our plane left on time and got into Miami 15 minutes early. Yea for American Airlines. After a 5 hour layover and a gate change we left for Grand Cayman an hour late, boo American airlines, but we got there with no other problems. We got to our room at Sunset House at 10:30 PM.

We got up on Monday and gathered our gear and headed for the Diveshop and Restaurant. Both opened on time with smiling and helpful staff. Breakfast was served quickly and was hot and cold as needed. The food was good and satisfying.

The boat was on time, left on time with the full crew of helpful members. Since the rest of our group will not come until 11/29 we were put on a boat with folks that have been diving all week with the same crew. While no solo is allowed and is clearly stated as such, the rest of the divers were allowed to dive their profiles, advised to dive their plan and computers and return to the boat with 500PSI. We were told we would be required to dive with the DM for our first dive with a DM. Briefing was done well and all safety equipment was on board I was told where it was and was told if I wished to see it they would be happy to show it to me. I looked, it was all there and appeared to be in excellent condition. A hookah was dangled off the back of the boat once we were tied to the mooring. We got in the water and descended to our planned depth of <80 FSW (actually 75') and did made our way long the wall at Sentential Rock. The wildlife was abundant and wonderful to see.

We ended up with our dive time at 30 min at Max depth of 75'. There was a moderate current and I, having made my first dive in 8 months gobbled air while working into the current, we turned at 1500 PSI and made our way back to the mooring line with 700 PSI. With a slow ascent to 15' and a full 5 minute safety stop. I surfaced with 480 PSI and climbed the ladder and safely completed the dive. We saw huge tarpon and a laundry list of corals and sponges.

We had a 45 minute surface interval while traveling to North Eden. A 40' reef dive. We made our way through several swim throughs and saw huge tarpon, a napping nurse shark and corals and sponges too numerous to mention. 55 minutes, (as planned) Max depth 42 feet and we spent 15 minutes below the boat exploring the reef. The DM surfaced giving us latitude to finish the last 15 minutes of the dive unattended. I completed the dive with 1080 PSI. Not that bad for and old guy using a 72 CF tank. Water temp was 81 deg F surface temp +/-83 with water as smooth as glass. A wonderful dive.

We returned to the dock in time to have a good lunch at My Bar and fill out our log books. We decided to explore some and went to the turtle farm where we saw hundreds of turtles of various ages and an area for the them to do the wild thing and make and hatch their young. There are tanks that allow one to handle to turtles and have a first hand approach to seeing and experiencing the Green turtles before they are released into the wild to increase the population.

We then headed for Hell Grand Cayman, looked at the strange rock formations and then purchased and sent postcards to friends and families postmarked Hell.

We returned to Sunset House. We explored the gift shop, bought a rum cake and went to the Cathy Church gallery onsite. We did purchase 3 8 X 10 prints that were matted and a coffee table book with lots of great pictures. While looking Cathy Church came in and introduced herself to us a personalized the autograph of her book.

We then went and had an adult beverage, with enough time for a quick nap and then down to dinner at the harvest house onsite. Dinner was plenty and satisfying at and fair price.

So in summation, our first 2 days and 1 night at Sunset House has been every thing we had hoped for and more. I will report on day 3 of our journey and vacation tomorrow evening. This is shaping up to be a memorable vacation.

Well day 2 of diving wasn't as good as day 1 but was still fanstastic

The wind came up as a storm was moving through. Shore diving was out of the question. The Diving on the west side of the Island was rough so they took the boats to the South side and moved us to the South Side by van. We did our 2 tank dives in some moderate surge. It really isn't that bad to deal with. I stayed up an extra couple of feet to make sure I didn't bang into any of the reef. There was still plenty of life on the reef to behold. Even the fish were being moved around pretty good from the surge. The 2nd dive was 60 minutes and 45'. I ended up with 700 PSI and 54 minutes. My SAC was higher than the first dive trying to keep up with rocketman, I won't do that again. This time we decided to follow the DM again but he took off like he had a rocket up his backside. We quit trying to keep up with him (different DM than the first dive) and did our own exploring closer to the boat. All in all a good day of diving.

When we got back we had lunch and walked into town. Scuba board members are absolutely accurate when saying walking along the road to town from Sunset House is a little harrowing experience. There are limited to no sidewalks and cars cruise by very close. We did the customary T-Shirt and trinket shopping. Went to an Italian place for dinner called Casanova's. The food was very good, the service so-so. We walked back towards Margaritaville and finally got a Taxi back to the resort. We went to My Bar for a beer. Then to the room for a nice sleep for tomorrows activities.

All in all a good fun day even with the wind, surf and occasional rain shower.

One thing I had not seen before this trip, the gratuity is 15% and is always added to the bill. It is almost sad because good service will generally yield a 20% tip and great service may yield more. If they don't want me to choose the amount and determine 15% is the number, they will probably get their 15%. The waitress at My Bar gave extra good service. We put the charges on our tab (with the 15% added) and gave her cash for an extra tip. She returned the extra and asked if that was intended and if we knew about the added gratuity. We gave her that and a couple extra $ and thanked her. Sunset House has some very good staff. I would stay here again!

Another good day of diving. We went to 2 shallow reefs on the south side of the island. Still too rough to make the dock on the west side this morning. So again we went by van to the southside and loaded from there and did 2 dives, the first was 57 feet for 57 minutes. The second was 54 fsw for 56 min. We left for sting ray city after lunch and it was pretty rough. My wife who is not a diver and hates the water went along. When we got there it was 4 foot swells with current. My wife tried getting in the water but it was very rough with a strong current. She didn't make it so we ended up waiting for the rest of the group. When we got back they had opened the backyard for shore diving as it had calmed down substantially. We are supposed to dive the Kittiwake in the morning if it remains calm enough to leave from Sunset House.

I really hope it is calm enough for the Kittiwake. We don't leave until 2PM sunday so hopefully I will get a chance to see the mermaid tomorrow. Overall the weather has been good and the diving even better. I think Cozumel and Roatan and Grand Cayman are all 3 great dive spots and would consider each one of them 0providing a great experience with 3 different diving locations. I would go back to any of them. I will try to post about the Kittiwake tomorrow.

Glad you're having a good time. I got to visit the turtle farm one day when stopping on a cruise, & it was really neat.

Grand Cayman has a rep. on the forum of being an expensive place to vacation, from what I've gathered. Care to share how much sticker shock you're getting at meals, for groceries, etc...?

Richard.

GC is expensive.Groceries are about 20% more than in the states plus that is in CI dollars which is another 20% higher.Depending on where you are staying the rates range from reasonable to very expensive.Diving is about $95. per 2 tank boat dive and shore diving costs about $10. per tank at several places.

thnx for posting

Well the diving part of the trip is over. Great diving today including slaughter house wall and the Kittiwake. The Kittiwake was a fantastic dive. It is very acesable to divers of all abilities. 65 fsw puts you in the sand. There is some life that has taken to calling it home. We tied in on the reef just off of the wreck and you could see her looming in the background. A short swim puts you at the prop. After looking the wreck over, which has been very well cleaned up for divers on decks 1 to 3, and getting a good look around we started back to the dive boat. A huge school of horse eyed jacks came in to tell us good bye. On the swim back to the boat a lone sting ray came floating by as we came up under the dive boat.

All in all it was a great trip. Even though the weather was a little rough we still got our dives in. Sunset house moved us to the south side of the island in calm water. I was glad the weather calmed down enough to get to visit the Kittiwake. I would come back to Grand Cayman but I have a few other new places to try first.

It is a bit expensive here but I knew that before I booked the trip Thanks to all who gave tips and advise.

I will try to post a few pictures later, after I get home and have a look to see if any are worth it. ;)

So we got back from Grand Cayman. Stepped off the plane and it was 17 deg, Not Celsius and snowing. This sucks!

We were on the 2PM flight to Miami. We had a 2 hour layover ran through customs, re checked the bags ran for the gate and made it just as they were starting to board the plane. Getting the bags and getting through customs seemed to take forever. The lines wrapped clear around and back to #1 carousel. (American Airlines.) It was very busy but moved fairly quickly. We got stuck eating a turkey sandwich on the plane @ $10/ea.

Welcome to Miami customs. We have had that exact same experience both times through there and will take every option to avoid ever flying any international flights through Miami again.

Glad you had a fun trip and that the weather laid down enough to let you dive the Kittiwake. Thanks for posting about it for us!
