My husband and I just returned from a 10-day trip to Dominica for hiking and diving, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Very unspoilt location, very nice people, and if you can deal with the fact that you're driving on the wrong side of narrow, bumpy roads, easy to get around.

We stayed at the Anchorage, and had the run of their catamaran sailboat for our diving. Normally it's a 4-person boat, but since their other one was out of commission, they worked with us to keep us happy. Great reef selection (Champagne Reef is killer). Our preference is nice long relaxed dives, and we were more than satisfied. We also did one of their whale watches, and had a great time with both whales, and tons of dolphins.

Dominica is not a place to go if you like fancy shopping or super-luxurious resorts. They don't exist there. But the diving was good, the people were friendly, honest, and wonderful, the food was fine, and we love to hike and dive, and we got plenty of both.

Anchorage was extremely cooperative with us. We dove with both them and Dive Dominica (which is right next door), and found both to be just fine -- but it's hard to beat the relaxation of being on a large catamaran with intelligent, personable people with enough time to actually talk to you, and tell you about the island. In the best-dive-boat-ever category, Anchorage's catamaran wins hands down.
