Just returned from a week stay down in Akumal. 7 days hitting as many cenotes as possible. Stayed at Villas de Rossa. We have done this before, and as usual everything was great. Drank, ate, dived. It rained pretty good 2 days, but what the heck we were getting wet anyway. Dove with Francisco out of Playa, who came down to guide us thru Dreamgate, Angelita, Pet Cematary. All great, definitely do Dreamgate. PS is charging a little more these days, but they have really improved the area. All great all wonderful... except for the ride back to Cancun . We are packed up in our renta-SUV and on our way to the airport and we get stopped by the poliza at a checkpoint maybe a tenth of a mile from the airport entrance. Broad daylight, Sunday morning on a busy highway and we get a shake down for 100$ . Dirty headlights, worn wiper blades, luggage stacked too high? Who knows? Just driving while tourist. Talking with other groups, this seems like it is getting more common. We talked our way done to $40, but it irks me to be shook down on the way to the airport. You are an easy target, car full of luggage, trying to make a plane. Others have had to pay more. What's to keep these guys from throwing a joint in there and really demanding some tribute. Well, enough whining. Still had a good time, but the hotels, dive shops should watch this. Plenty of other places to dive.
