But, as the zero risk does not exist, Sylvain, the expert between the specialists of this difficult discipline that is the underground diving, lost his life on July 12, 2019 at the end of the day during an immersion in the cave de la Mescla, at Malaussene, in the Alpes-Maritimes.

The exact circumstances of this fatal accident remain to be determined precisely by the investigation of the Gendarmerie, the expertise and the autopsy. When the accident occurred in the second siphon of the underground stream, the two crew members who accompanied Sylvain in this immersion tried to bring him back. In the urgency of the situation, they reached an open area where they practiced a cardiac massage for nearly an hour before resolving to leave it there to go to alert relief. Sylvain's body was extracted by divers from the French Speleo Secours (SSF) the next day, Saturday, July 13, after the findings of use by the authorities.
