Hey all!
I'm currently a student studying abroad in Brisbane, and I've been working on getting my OW cert :D.

Anyways, I didn't realize that december would be full of killer jellies and all that. What are the chances of getting stung during these times? I went diving at Moreton Bay this past Saturday, and encountered a swarm of baby jellies on my way back to the boat.

Also, what are some good dive spots in Australia, other than the Taka/SOF liveaboards (too expensive for me), and the ningaloo reef (seems like it's really hard to get to exmouth)?

Thanks :)

There are plenty of great dive spots around Brisbane and I am sure others will advise you of these.
As for Taka etc, there are more budget optios. If you want to travel up north to see the Barrier Reef look at over night (or some good day trips) that offer 2 or 3 day trips to some Outer Reef areas.
Ocean Quest, Scubpro or the budget Kangaroo Explorer all have great sites and are a lot of fun. See here for some details

Cairns Live Aboard Over Night Dive Trips To The Outer Barrier Reef, Cod Hole And Coral Sea.

Ningaloo is a looong way from Brisbane and to far to travel just for a dive! Unless you go in April for the Whale sharks.

As for jellyfish, you dont get the box jellies so far down south. More tropical waters up here.

you can come and visit sydney and do boat dives with either prodive or frogdive.

hire a car and drive down to Jervis bay for a long weekend (~4 hrs drive, but worth stopping off along the way)

or obviously stay in Cairns and take advantage of the nightlife there, then go out on day boats!

There are no killer jellies around Brisbane!!

Go to Julian rocks in Byron Bay and do a couple f dives with sundive - very good!

Also head up to Mooloolooba and dive the wreck of the HMAS Brisbane!!

if i were you?

fly to Cairns, hire a camper and drive to melbourne,or time permitting, Adelaide.

and just stop and dive where you want...
