In late November my wife and I will be diving for 2 weeks in the Philippines. First, Dauin, then Malapascua, and finally Leyte. I have estimated a day travel between Dauin and Malapascua. Is this doable with public transport, or should we use a private driver from Liloan to Maya (if the latter, perhaps we'll do a side stop to see Kawasan Falls). Can anyone recommend a driver, or is the expectation to pick up a taxi at the port (or make a reservation through our Dauin operator...Bongo Bongo).

Thanks,

My suggestion:
1. Make the reservation with your Dauin operator if you need transport from Liloan to Maya. Take the first ferry across because you want to arrive at Maya as earlier as possible to take the public boat across.
2. Overnight in Cebu City. Finish your dive before noon and take the ferry to Liloan and then bus to Cebu City. Start early on following morning. Public or private transfer is entirely up to you.
3. There is overnight ferry from Dumagute to Cebu City but only THREE times a week.

Option 2 is my preference but 3 is relatively stress free if the sea is calm.

Good luck with the whaleshark spotting in Sogod Bay if you going to join in for the fun. BTW, Nov is the beginning of the season.

I have done that trip a few times, once, when there was a festa/street party on the way it took 24 hours, with a private driver. Which I recommend, you'll end up waiting around for too long on the South bus terminal in Cebu City where you'll have to switch, ect. Usually your hotel will have a driver they can hook you up with, these services change, and change phone numbers all the time.

I traveled last month from Malapascau to Dauin with a stop in Moalboal for a couple of nights and even the Malapascau to Moalboal is a long journey if you are taking any public transportation (in my case took bus from Cebu south terminal to Moalboal, shared taxi and took a Grab for the rest. Also the ferry to Malapascau doesn't travel at night so plan accordingly.

Happy bubbles....
