I have a transplate with a transplate harness. I keep eyeballing that nice pad on the transpack, but have had no issues with comfort with the transplate harness. I have 2, one set up on my doubles and one set up on my STA.

Does anyone have any comments on the benefits/drawbacks of the transpac or transplate?

The Transpac is the b@stard child of a BP/W and a traditional BCD - with the upshot being that it lacks most of the benefits of a BP/W while maintaining most of the drawbacks of a traditional BCD.

I have one of each. Each is best for me in different environments.

Transpac: comfy harness, light weight, easy to pack & travel with
I had this one first, then moved to SoCal with heavy exposure protection (7mm & drysuits) requiring alot more weight.

Transplate w/ SS Plate.: comfy very adjustable harness. Wookie - I add the DR backpad (Dr# BC1035) to the plate which helps with the long hikes in gear and insulates the cold SS plate in cold local waters. With the SS Plate I was able to dump 6 more lbs (or add 6 less w/ drysuit). I could easily switch to doubles in this set up.

The Transpac has a padded side panel around the waist/hip area which the Transplate does not. Since I'm wearing so much exposure protection I don't even feel it.

Just my 2 psi.

My Transpac is to be used for traveling diving. I can dive with any style of tank, any style of exposure protection or lack thereof, etc. Maybe one of these days I'll get me a rebreather and get the adapter kit to convert the Transpac into a CCR rig. Or if I were to want to be super cool, I'd rig it up to dive sidemount.

My Transplate/SS hard plate is currently set up for SoCal diving. I grab that mother and go.

Although there were times when I decided to abuse my back by toting my dive rig up and down hills to get to a good shore dive site, I'd whip out the Transpac for comfort and convenience of lugging the heavy rig.

I have both and with out question I say the transplate. My set up is a transplate harness, ss dive rite plate, dive rite sta, and oxycheq Mach v 30 wing. With out a doubt it's the beat set up I have ever used.
