How does one become trained and certified to work on requlators and other SCUBA gear? Is it possible to become trained without being a dealer or distributor of individual products?
I would compare this to a mechanic that works on cars that is not working for a car dealer. A Diver should be able to service his own equipment safely if trained as such.

Are dealers only able to service the products where they are certified by the manufactuers that they sell thru? It would seem limited since there are so many different brands of gear?

I've talked to Aqualung and Scubapro. Both say that you have to work for a dealer or have one of their dealers sponsor you to take the official class. Servicing your own tanks can be done by taking a visual inspection class and TDI offers an O2 Service Technician class.

Regarding tank inspections, I think the class costs around $300. How long does being a vis inspector last before you need to be re-certified? course sounds interesting enough.
