Visiting and diving Palau typically involves land based diving and enduring a 45min boat ride out from Koror to the sites or utilizing a live-a-board which instead is a 5-15 minute ride to many of the sites using a dingy.

We something different we chose to charter a sail boat complete with captain, John and DM/Cook, Charlie (John's wife).

Eclipse - Palau Diving, Fishing, Kayaking, Snorkeling and Wreck Diving Tours

We went out for ten days of which we dove on all but one because of the rough weather. The boat, The Eclipse can pack 6 guests plus John and Charlie. Though 70% of their guests are a single couple. We had two families, 4 adults and 2 kids so we packed the boat. Which was never that crowded except a few times when most piled into the cabin during a squall.

We dove all of the usual sites, Blue Hole, Blue Corner (3 times with great action including one dive with well over 20 sharks), Peliu (twice), German Channel (twice), Jelly Fish Lake, etc. plus a couple of WWII wrecks near Koror. About the only site the Eclipse does not dive is U-Long Channel. We dove it and Siles Tunnel after our trip catching Ulong on a strong incoming tide which just a hoot. Even our dive guides were hooping and hollering over the fish action in the front of the channel. When the dive guides are enjoying the show you know it is a good dive.

Utilizing the Eclipse is not for everyone as it is more like camping at sea. But if you do not mind changing out your own cylinders in exchange waking up in quiet secluded coves or getting to dive Blue Corner before it turns into a Champagne dive from all the day boats the Eclipse maybe for you.

The one amazing part is the food Charlie cooks. Asian delights all made from scratch. Even more so because Charlie does all the cooking after leading the dive. She does what would typically take two people. Simply amazing.

We also spent a few days around Koror doing land tours which was well worth our time. We also spent a 1/2 seeing Peliu which was the scene of one of the most difficult battles in the Pacific during WWII.

Great trip report!

I've just booked a 6 night trip on Eclipse with my husband for next Feb / March. We're also having 4 nights at Carolines to chill out before hand and then flying over to Yap afterwards to see the Mantas.

Did you get any photos? I'd be interested to see any you have of the dives or the boat?

Thanks :)

I took a bunch of photos while diving but none on the boat.

Here is a Crocodile Fish that I found on one of the wrecks (Helmet Wreck) outside of Koror.

Thanks

You mentioned you did some day trips - what would you recommend? We have 4 days on land before Eclipse and want to make the most of our time there. I was considering the Peliu WWII trip and maybe the big island tour. Did you use Sam's Tours to book them?

UK,

I heard a rumour that there's new yacht or sailboat in Palau doing customized trips...possibly more oriented towards other Rock Island or land/island based attractions?? Apparently the boat is brand new. A friend mentioned this coming through Yap recently. I'll be in Palau later this year, but was wondering if anyone knows anything?

cheers,
Bob

It might be these guys... www.sailpalau.com
Not sure if they are up and running yet - I've seen their work in progress videos in u tube

If you read the Blog Entry link from the Eclipse website it talks about the new charter and shows a picture of the boat. It also seems to imply it will be run by the same captain and his wife.

My long ago thread. John and Charlie have a second boat that is a cabin cruiser that is now in operation. If you are a couple and want a bit more comfort that boat may be for you. We saw during our trip as it was being out fitted. It is for a couple only as there is just one guest cabin.

You either go diving or to Anguar, Peleliu (WWII wrecks) or Kayangel (atoll). These islands are day trips, Peleliu hs some lodges.
Babeldaob Island offers attractions like waterfalls, stone monolithe, stone faces, New Capitol all reached by rental car (no street signs, no decent maps) or tour operators.

You don´t dive-> you don´t need a boat. Ask Sam´s, Fish n´Fins or Neco for tours.

I´m a resident and do not work for any of them.

Enjoy!
